Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, l’apparition du premier sourire chez un bébé n’est pas un processus « naturel » mais semble être déterminé par la culture dans laquelle l’enfant grandit. Il existe des cultures où mamans et bébes se regardent peu et sourient guère, mais l’enfant grandit néanmoins sans troubles psychologiques.

So gibt es Kulturen, in denen die Mütter kaum Blickkontakt zu ihren Babys suchen und beide wenig lächeln. Dennoch wachsen die Kinder zu psychisch völlig normalen Erwachsenen heran.

Contrary to common belief babys first smile is not the result of a « natural » maturing process. There exist cultures in which mothers and babies don’t have constant eye-contact and smile rarely. But the children grow up without any psychological problem. The development of emotions in children seems to have a very strong cultural component.
